Hillsborough County Secondary Music Council

All County

The Hillsborough All-County Ensembles are an opportunity for the top musicians from throughout the county to experience music making in a large ensemble setting with students from throughout the county. This is also a chance for these top-tier students to work with a professional director other than their own. This annual event showcases the best and brightest Hillsborough County has to offer.

Live auditions are held annually at Strawberry Crest High School. Auditions are blind and conducted by the directors throughout the county. Based on their auditions, students earn a position in the honor ensembles.

Rubrics

  

  • Scales:  Judged on tone, note accuracy, articulation (Band) or tempo (Orchestra).
  • Percussion: Tempo, rhythmic accuracy, and musicality.

Scores determine eligibility for Round 2 

Key Dates

  

  • October 18: Scale recordings due
  • November 18: Live Auditions at Strawberry Crest HS
  • December 5: Results announced
  • January 30 - February 1, 2025: All County Music Weekend

Audition Materials and Requirements

Middle School Band

Round 1 (Pre-Screening):

  • Scales: One octave Bb, F, and Chromatic
  • Percussion: Snare rudiment exercise

Round 2 (Live Audition):

  • Scales: Bb, F, and Ab (one octave each)
  • Chromatic Scale: One octave
  • Etude and Sight Reading
  • Percussion: Snare rudiment exercise

High School Band (9 - 10) (11 - 12)

Round 1 (Pre-Screening):

  • 9/10 Band: Two-octave G, C, Eb, Ab Concert and Chromatic scales
  • 11/12 Band: Two-octave G, C, Eb, Ab Concert and Chromatic scales
  • Percussion: Snare rudiment exercise

Round 2 (Live Audition):

  • 9 - 10 Band: Two scales chosen from Concert G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db (two      octaves), Chromatic Scale, Etude, Sight Reading
  • 11 - 12 Band: Two scales from 12 concert scales (two octaves), Chromatic Scale, Etude, Sight Reading

Percussion: Snare rudiment exercise 

Middle School Orchestra

  • Middle School: Two scales (arpeggios included)
    • Violin 1: D & G Majors (2 octaves)
    • Violin 2: G Major (2 octaves), D Major (1 octave)
    • Viola/Cello: C Major (2 octaves), D Major (1 octave)
    • Bass: G & D Majors (1 octave)

Round 2 (Live Audition):

  • Scales,  Etude, and Sight Reading
